We visit Cedar Key often and already know many of the local legends, ghost sightings, and stories; so we were pleasantly surprised by how much of Ryan’s tour was new to us. He shared stories rooted in the island’s history that we had never heard before and took us to parts of town we had never visited. He has clearly done his research and built relationships with local business owners that give his guests access to places the general public normally doesn’t see. That alone made the tour worthwhile. But what really made the experience special was something Ryan probably couldn’t script if he tried: at almost every stop, someone local seemed to know him. People would greet him as we rode through town in the golf cart. At one point, a woman who had lost her dog actually drove up to our group, greeted Ryan by name, and asked him to keep an eye out for her missing pet. Those interactions made it immediately clear that Ryan isn’t simply a tour guide who has learned about Cedar Key—he is part of the community and is known and trusted by the people who live there. That gave the entire experience an authenticity you can’t manufacture and simply don’t get from a corporate tour company. Ryan is upfront that the tour is meant to be historical, with no guarantee that guests will spot a ghost. Nonetheless, many of the stops were genuinely creepy, and the tour definitely makes for a great Halloween-season experience. If you already know Cedar Key, you’ll almost certainly learn something new from Ryan. If you don’t, I can’t imagine a better way to be introduced to the island. Highly recommended!
