Fourth time staying on the island - 2004 and 2020 at Pirates Cove (next door) and at the former Firefly Cottages, now Old Florida Fish Camp. Both stays on the property - 2022 and last weekend - were in Cabin 6. Kudos to Dan and Stacie for the work they did to bring the property back from the devastation of Hurricane Helene. My two nights there were meant to be a solo retreat. I live closer to the east coast but it's Bike Week and nothing was available or affordable, so I was pleased at the room rates and complimentary upgrades - the bicycles, the kayaks and the golf carts. My oldest daughter decided to join me on Saturday night and we went kayaking on Sunday - her first time. We did not use the bikes or the golf carts, although I probably would use the bikes if I visit again. A couple of small things I found disappointing - the missing bag of Cedar Key coffee mentioned in the cabin description. I bring my own coffee, creamer and coffee maker so we were covered, but my daughter wanted some sugar for her cup and there was none, just artificial sweetener. A nice touch provided by the former owners of the property was a carafe of water in the room when we arrived in 2022. Also the ice maker in the lounge area was not operational. Fortunately I also brought my own and it is only a short walk to the convenience store so there is that. Some things that would have made me happier - a firmer bed and fewer pillows to deal with. The cabin is small and there was really no good place to put four of the six pillows we didn't need when we went to bed. About the only place to put them was on the floor. A dimmer on the overhead light in the main room would also be nice. My plan for the second night was to "nest" with a pizza from Cedar Key pizza, a nice bottle of wine and a dive into a great book by a local Cedar Key author. The bright overhead light killed the ambience. I turned it off and read by the light from the bathroom and the small light over the coffee bar in the "kitchen." The retro mini fridge was cute and appreciated, but I wonder why some cabins do not come with microwaves. Overall the cabin was clean and the property was well kept. You can tell a lot of thought and hard work went into bringing it back from the devastation. It was definitely worth saving. I know it has only been open since October. I would be interested in coming back to see the progress the owners make in the coming months.
